22. File Under “Free Music”- “Joshua’s Demons”

Sorry for the delay since the last post. I started something and then couldn’t finish it. Then I was in Copenhagen for a week with the fam. The plus side is that I’m gonna try boost my out put for the next few weeks to make it up. I’ve got a mini series of posts called “Dirty Danish Delights” coming up which I’ll hopefully get kicked off before the weekend. And today I’m starting off the category I was trying to start before I left.

The original intention of kevinisabastard.com was to find a shit tonne of kick ass free music and show it off. I got pretty sidetracked just writing about stuff I liked or had on the brain. So this is the first of the posts which focus on free above all else. I wanted to open up with something strong, “Joshua’s Demons” By JOSH JAKQ.  Well it’s strong apart from the fact that in some places it’s “Joshua’s Demons” and in others it’s “Joshuas Demon’s”. We’ll forget about that though.

Fucking belter of an album from Oz. Killer voice, sometimes reminds me of the guy from Reef without the attempted Mick Jagger thing going on when he sings big if that makes any sense. Check “Intro” out and you’ll hear it. I was really struck by the whole record originally because the first track I heard was “Freak Some More” which is real funky and chilled in a pop way. The thing is though, the whole album is deeper than that. It’s trippier and more serious. My personal favourite is “See You Later” which is super sexy and laid back with some serious falsetto going on.The album is on Soundcloud as one playlist or ya can download the tracks individually for free free free. The dude is amazing and only has like 800 likes on the auld book of faces and 300 followers on Soundcloud so you get bonus hipster points which means you’re allowed listen to some Alphabeat afterwards. At the very least check out his big hair in the bizarre video for “Freak Some More” and his menacing merchandise.

I wore a shirt for this post but no socks just in case anyone was wondering…

21. New Music: La Roux – “Trouble in Paradise”

At the risk of making myself too available I’m gonna have to do another post this week. New music. La Roux. How do people feel about La Roux? Do people hate La Roux? I’m not sure why, but I always got that impression. I loved the self titled debut album and I think all of the singles have been part of my on-my-own-in-work-singing-in-falsetto repertoire (apparently that’s how you spell that, look at me learning and expanding my mind at all times like some sort of word wizard).

Anyway, La Roux were a band but are now an Elly Jackson, the other member got the boat off the island, and she has a new album called “Trouble in Paradise” and it’s one of the best albums I’ve heard. It’s poppy and summery, funky and interesting. It makes me want to go dancing but also be on my own at the same time. It’s a very cool combination of things and comes together as a very complete album. The quality is consistent throughout.

There’s a couple of very definite vibes going on. When I first listened to it, I thought it was what an album totally based on “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie would sound like. That’s not really true. There’s a real Bowie influence but there’s there’s lots of indie elements too, moments where it could be written by The Cribs. Then you’ve got “Paradise is You” which reminds me of that track that Bryan Adams and Mel C from the Spice Girls did, “When You’re Gone”. I fucking love that song. Major guilty pleasure. Towards the end of the album it takes a kinda power ballad/ 10cc- “I’m Not In Love“/ Phil Collins turn too. I like that there’s tonnes of influences that you can pick out through “Trouble in Paradise”. It’s like the bibliography of an album which is pretty cooooool if ya ask me.

The some of the song titles are probably the weakest point of the album. “Tropical Chancer” sounds like the world’s mildest racial slur. It’s still a great song. “Sexotheque” on the other hand is one of my favourite titles for anything ever.

If you need convincing that it’s a fucking awesome album the tracks to pick are proooooooobably “Uptight Downtown” for the dancey buzz and “Sexotheque” and “Tropical Chancer” for when you’ve had too much to drink, the evening is winding down and you want to cry/dance out the demons on your lonesome.

All in all, I’d give it 21 stars out of a possible 24,( that’s 87.5% if we’re gonna be like that, 24 is a fucking badass number though). I’m sure you can buy it in shops and shit or like on iTunes or whatever. It’s worth paying for. She’s playing The Academy in November and tickets a fairly cheap too so that should be bleedin massif.

20. You Should Have Heard This By Now: Raleigh Ritchie

About a year ago, I signed up to a mailing list in return for a three track ep. I was on a free music binge so in the end I didn’t even end up unzipping the downloaded file. As part of the binge I downloaded one tracks separately and gave it the five stars on the iPod so I remembered it. I didn’t for long time.

This summer, I’ve been listening to a lot of music in work. I don’t have the chance to keep putting on albums so I need playlists that’ll last for a few hours at a time. One of my fallback playlists is my top rated playlist which just has every song that I’ve given five stars. So I heard this song a couple of days in a row and it really stuck. And I’m still getting these emails every two months but I still haven’t opened them or tried to see who the artist was, band or just a dude, I knew nothing. Until about two weeks ago. I was flicking through music channels on tv, something I haven’t done in years, and a song was just starting so the title and artist came up and there it was, Raleigh Ritchie. And the video, it had the guy who plays Grey Worm in “Game of Thrones”. I was pretty impressed. Fair play chung fella, you’ve a real actor man in the video.

Turns out he’s the fucking guy. Raleigh Ritchie, emailing me for a year, is actually a super duper multi talented blud.

I thought that was interesting… whatever like…

Anyway, the original track is worth checking out. It’s really atmospheric and has some cool lyrics. The video is also pretty trippy. Have a look and a listen. Look at me being fun and trendy and giving people little GoT factoids and calling it GoT. Am I cool? I think so. Sweet.

Shmownload it here (only for shmad lads)

19. Cover Versions – “Pony”

Ok. I gotta sort my shit and stick with this. Don’t worry, I’m 22 now. I’m older and wiser. I have a desk. New desk, new me. First off, shout out to Matty Moo for sorting out my new header thingy so the site looks all sexy and seductive.

More importantly, write some music stuff. Ok, now this one is fucking kick ass. It’s a cover version that takes us on a magical journey and means I get to show off three super gnarly tracks all in one. Awh boyeeeeeee.

So, “Pony” by Ginuwine, is the original. Weird video, weird lyrics, weird and convoluted euphemism about horses. Fantastic song though. Forget the verse for the most part. It’s one of those songs where you mostly want to listen to the chorus over and over again. Let’s be honest, you’re unlikely to go around singing “I’m just a bachelor…” but you will be slow grinding by yourself in work/in the car/ in mass/ on public transport while singing “If you’re horny, Let’s do it, ride it, my pony…”

Theeeen, a few weeks ago, Zak Waters, my mutha fucking hero, released a cover of the track because he’d been covering it on tour. It remains faithful to the original but with a Zak Waters twist. The vocals are better. He goes all X Tina (Christina Aguilera for the lay folk who aren’t cool in 2004 like me). It’s chill and sexy and cool.

But guess what, little homies! Zak Waters send me on an old vision quest back to one of the most badass remixes in the history of the universe, Rihanna “Jump (Club Cheval Remix feat Theolonius London)”. SO fucking ominous . Some creepy Trap is just what the doctor order. Although trap sounds like it’s a word for vagina… it’s gotta be. That’s not a comment on Rihanna’s vagina though. She’s probably a cool lady with a perfectly fine collection of genitals. If you’re my family pretend you never read this.

Alas, I digress. There we have three groovy tracks all around one idea. I think they’ve all got their merits. The original gets fuckoffmadstyle bonus points for being the original and the Rihanna tracks gives you exactly what you wanted from the song. However, all round I think the Zak Waters take is the best. He’s got a kickass soulful voice and it’s just an awesome cover.

Hit me up with cool covers of shit either in the comments or on the twitter phone. Yezzur

18. You Should Have Heard This By Now: Amanda Blank- “I Love You”

Iggy Azalea is the 2014 equivalent of Ja Rule. I like “Fancy” and I’m sure she has some other decent songs but I think she’s a pretty crappy rapper. She spells her own name. Multiple times. I hate to say it, but I think female rappers are kinda in fashion. Or maybe just aggressive women in hip hop.

Anyway, I think somebody who is worth checking out, and was around before this popularity surge and hasn’t really blown up, is Amanda Blank. I dunno what she’s doing right now but in 2009 she released one of my favourite albums, “I Love You”.

It’s fun and guilty sexy. Not the kind of sexy you want to admit to finding sexy but still sexy. It’s produced by Diplo and features all kinda people like Santigold and Lykke Li.   When I was studying for my Leaving Cert, I had some sort of a mental episode and my brother and I danced to the entire album straight through. That’s probably an awful advertisement for anything… Still, it’s got that Diplo, dance-y vibe to it which I love. The highlight for me is probably either the opening track, “Make It Take It” or track ten, “Big Heavy”. The first is a super high energy/electro belter, while “Big Heavy” almost has a kind of disco element.

It’s one of my favourite albums and I’ve been drawn to it again recently because I’ve been listening to the radio a lot and hearing the big Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj tracks and then I was thinking back to the Azalea Banks album from like last year. I think Amanda Blank was ahead of the curve. I think that if this album had dropped right now it would be huge and that seems kinda sad to me. So give it a listen. All five of you.

17. I’ve been listening to…

Ok so I started this like 2 weeks ago and then forgot about it. I’ve been working pretty much full time so that’s been kinda taking it’s toll. After work for the last while I’ve been too tired to do anything. It’s only now that I have the energy after work to write again. So, anyway, I’m finished. Finished the year, finished the degree. Since I last posted anything there’ve been lots of different musical events in the world of me. I’ve opted to post a playlist of the general crap that has got me through the last few weeks of college and then launch into newer stuff. We’ll divide it into the highs, the all-nighters where I’ve been deliriously buzzing on my own and the lows, sobbing into some dirty geometry and wanting someone to hold me.

Highs:

White Women” by Chromeo.

This is my favourite album. I love every song. Even the songs that shouldn’t be cool like “Frequent Flyer” and “Sexy Socialite” are fucking awesome. Album has been out for a while so I couldn’t really do a “New Music” entry about it but that’s not to say it wouldn’t be worth a full blog post. I think Matt from Back Room Beat gave it the best endorsement, “White Women is what Random Access Memories should’ve been”. It’s funky, it’s sexy, it’s fun. It’s got some ELO, some Jamiroquai, some Hall & Oates, some Katy Perry, some Prince and shit tonnes of vintage Chromeo. It’s intense. I might have cried. Nobody was around so I’m pretty sure I’m still an alpha dog. The highlight for me is “Lost on the Way Home” feat Solange. It was the track that jumped out to me on first listen. Just sounds fucking cool. Not dealing with that elevator bullshit even slightly.

“Kill Me” and “Better Under Water” by Make The Girl Dance.

I know nothing about Make The Girl Dance. I assume they’re French. These two songs are amazing. The lyrics are fantastically  shite. Musically they remind me of Martin Solveig from before “Hello” or whatever that song was that got massive. Is that electro? I don’t know what you’d call it. It’s montage music, sexy montage music, with added pelvic thrusting.

Lows:

Betty Who, “Slow Dancing -EP” and “The Movement”.

Christ. They’re not lows as in I didn’t enjoy the music but the lows where I was tired and emotional.

15. New Music: Crimson -“Bootylicious (Crimson Edit)”

Do remixes count as new music? Of course. Crimson is a sound dude and this is a cool remix. I love when remixed classic songs work and this does. It’s chilled and sexy. I think one of the most important elements of a quality remix is identifying what’s good about the original. That really works in this one. I can’t remember anything about the original apart for the one lyrical hook. Honestly, what did the rest of that song sound like? Crimson takes what’s good from the original and makes a totally different song out of it. Very cool.

He also appeared recently on a really interesting international project, “Trying to Find Love in a Parallel Universe”. It’s 26 tracks from 25 artists all over the world. Have a listen to Crimson’s effort here and check out his soundcloud for cool and freeeee tunes here. I met the man himself over in DCU last week while I was helping out long time friend of Kevinisabastard.com, Matt Moynihan, with his deck-nomination on DCU FM. The boys in DCU DJ Soc are running a Boiler Room inspired event tomorrow night which should definitely be worth a look, including sets from Crimson and Back Room Beat aka Matt Moyhihan. Check out the details here.

* Had some trouble embedding the soundcloud track so I’ve stuck a link to the track in instead

14. New(ish) Music: Skizzy Mars -“Pace”

Super lazy, soz. Struggling to stay motivated to write or search for music. I might go back through some old finds and dig out some free mixtapes and stuff for y’all to keep the blog ticking over. In the mean time something kinda came up. “Pace” by Skizzy Mars. Skizzy has been one of my favourite rappers since I first heard “Douchebag“. So that’s been like two years. He’s been pretty consistent. I go through phases of being super into him. His last major tape, “Phases“, happened to come out at a time when I wasn’t feeling particularly hip hop so I never really got it. It took so long to come out and everything he released was so good that it just became so built up that it could never live up to the hype in my mind.

“Pace” has just appeared at a time when I needed something new to listen to and it’s really good. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to blog about it when it first appeared and I didn’t listen to it the day it came out. I gave it a few days. I honestly think it’s the most consistent thing he’s ever put out. I hate to say that music is “more mature” but I think Skizzy is more mature this time around. Like, he is younger that I am and I have total respect for all the stuff he’s put out, but there were times when he came across as a dick in his lyrics. There’s still plenty of drugs, plenty of women, but there is a developed character behind it. Now there’s women he wants but can’t be with and shit like that. It’s more human, I guess.

I think musically it’s better than anything he’s put out in a while too.The new stuff on “Phases” was a lot of similar sounds and the general vibe was too chilled for me. This time around he’s back to using great samples which was one of his best traits before. He was able to put out good all-round tunes. The highlights for me are “Summer 11” and “Too Ill”. The vocals are great as you’d expect but the tracks are class. Also check out how he says heart in “Mistakes”. Gas.

Anyway, download the full tape here and get the rest of his stuff here [all freeeeeeeeee].

13. I’ve been listening to…

It’s been a busy week or two and I’ve probably been burning the candle at both ends. Well, it’s caught up on me. Serious man flu going on. Sweating out like a mother fucker. Anyway, it gives me the chance to get back to this.

So what have I been listening to? Here we go.

That Zoax EP. Over and over. My only issues is that it’s not an album. Means I’m listening to it straight through a couple of times in a row before I feel like I’ve had enough.

Then on an entirely different note I’ve been listening to some chillwavey/indietronica kinda stuff:

“Old Love/ New Love” by Twin Shadow.- Love this one. It’s got some real chilled bits combined with that early house throwback piano and vocals combo. Then at the end there’s a quiet bit with hella Prince influence. It’s just cool. Sexy and funky. This was my favourite.

“Coloured Screens” by Antonio Paul.

“Power Trip”(J Cole cover) by X Ambassadors

“Embrace” by Hayden James (some kinda weird version)

“You’re Not Good Enough” by Blood Orange

“You’re the One for Me” by Great Good Fine Ok

“Make Me” by Ambassadeurs

Check out the playlist here. That has everything except the Ambassadeurs track (which is a free download) and the J Cole cover. It also has everything from the last entry and will have everything from future entries!
