26 July 2021 – Over You by Zak Waters

Over the last 2 years or so, I’ve been Marie Condo-ing my personal social media. Does this make me happy? Mute, block, delete the app. At this point, I’m down to only having Instagram on my phone and only using Facebook for messenger and very occasionally to check when people’s birthday’s are. Even on Instagram, I’ve cut down on who I follow to people I genuinely enjoy as an online entity. I’ve even muted people that I like, but have stressful lives. I’ve been happier for it.

One person, who has survived the culls is Pretty Sister, formerly known as Zak Waters (possibly still known as Zak Waters, that might be his name, but probably isn’t). He’s got a new album out and, as I assume he intended, I haven’t listened to it because it made me want to listen to some of his stuff that he released years ago as Zak Waters.

Sometimes the song of the day is down to a moment within a song. My song today is “Over You”. What I really like about it is this kind of a turn around that the song does twice. The music seems to slow to a stop and suddenly start back up again. It’s like it dummies a stop coming out of the chorus and then bursts into the best sing along part of the song – the repeated “No don’t wanna be lonely lonely lonely” bit. Zak Waters has an incredible voice so it really works well. I love this song because it has such a pop/edm crossover feel. It’s from 2013 which was during my nightclub years and this was just what I wanted in those days. It’s got the kind of Moombahton beat to it which combines well to make it a real summery song. All together a terrible choice of song of the day for a school night, because all I want to do now is drink cocktails and dance.

You can listen to “Over You” by Zak Waters here.

19. Cover Versions – “Pony”

Ok. I gotta sort my shit and stick with this. Don’t worry, I’m 22 now. I’m older and wiser. I have a desk. New desk, new me. First off, shout out to Matty Moo for sorting out my new header thingy so the site looks all sexy and seductive.

More importantly, write some music stuff. Ok, now this one is fucking kick ass. It’s a cover version that takes us on a magical journey and means I get to show off three super gnarly tracks all in one. Awh boyeeeeeee.

So, “Pony” by Ginuwine, is the original. Weird video, weird lyrics, weird and convoluted euphemism about horses. Fantastic song though. Forget the verse for the most part. It’s one of those songs where you mostly want to listen to the chorus over and over again. Let’s be honest, you’re unlikely to go around singing “I’m just a bachelor…” but you will be slow grinding by yourself in work/in the car/ in mass/ on public transport while singing “If you’re horny, Let’s do it, ride it, my pony…”

Theeeen, a few weeks ago, Zak Waters, my mutha fucking hero, released a cover of the track because he’d been covering it on tour. It remains faithful to the original but with a Zak Waters twist. The vocals are better. He goes all X Tina (Christina Aguilera for the lay folk who aren’t cool in 2004 like me). It’s chill and sexy and cool.

But guess what, little homies! Zak Waters send me on an old vision quest back to one of the most badass remixes in the history of the universe, Rihanna “Jump (Club Cheval Remix feat Theolonius London)”. SO fucking ominous . Some creepy Trap is just what the doctor order. Although trap sounds like it’s a word for vagina… it’s gotta be. That’s not a comment on Rihanna’s vagina though. She’s probably a cool lady with a perfectly fine collection of genitals. If you’re my family pretend you never read this.

Alas, I digress. There we have three groovy tracks all around one idea. I think they’ve all got their merits. The original gets fuckoffmadstyle bonus points for being the original and the Rihanna tracks gives you exactly what you wanted from the song. However, all round I think the Zak Waters take is the best. He’s got a kickass soulful voice and it’s just an awesome cover.

Hit me up with cool covers of shit either in the comments or on the twitter phone. Yezzur

9.- New Music: Zak Waters

I had a couple of blogs planned to write today but they kinda got blown outta the water. Heh. Christ. Zak Waters, genius. I first heard of him from Sunset in the Rearview, which is a super solid source for good tapes. He’s been one of the highlights. So then I followed my usual process of general creeping and downloaded all the free stuff he had on Facebook which was pretty consistently good. Anyway, that was a while ago and I’ve been a massive fan since.

So today was the release date for “Over You”, the latest single from “Lip Service”. It’s a bit more serious than some of the other tracks from the album which is fine by me. He is one of my favourite singers around at the minute. He’s doing a really poppy, electronic thing which could quite easily fit into a “chart music” kinda category but I think there’s something that little bit more interesting going on. I once had an argument with someone about whether disco was relevant anymore or still had a place in modern music. I think that Zak Waters is the progression of my ideas of what disco is. Like, Daft Punk have kinda revisited disco in the last year, but I think that Zak Waters is actually making modern disco. Rather than writing reworkings of disco/Motown/ blue-eyed soul or whatever else people are doing, “Lip Service” takes all these influences and makes it new. Zak Waters is keeping disco relevant.

I love “Over You” because you get a real confident vibe though the vocals without it seeming cocky. He has the voice to totally do a Christina Aguilera all over it and it works. Like, listen to that “Don’t wanna be lonely” -bit. That is serious singing. Part of the reason that he doesn’t come across as a dick is the way he’s played it. The videos are visually interesting and don’t focus solely on him. There’s none of the same ego as you see with some amazing singers. I like this song and the album as a whole because it covers a lot of bases. I would totally recommend it if you like anything from Hall & Oates, Chic, Stevie Wonder to Katy Perry or Mikey Mike or Pony Pony Run Run. He combines classic songwriting, a great voice and lots of really well put together, contemporary, electronic pop sounds.

I fucking love him. I sound like an obsessed idiot, but I mean it.
